B'nai Mitzvah Family Journey

COP_1823.jpeg

Temple Shalom’s B'nai Mitzvah students attend our Monday afternoon religious school where they learn the prayers for their B'nai Mitzvah and Jewish history with our B'nai Mitzvah Director and teacher Ye'ela Rosenfeld. The students also have private tutoring sessions with Ye’ela to learn their torah portion and prepare other prayers for their service. Each student meets individually and as a family with Rabbi August to write their speech and help prepare the family for what it means to become a B'nai Mitzvah or "a son/daughter of the commandment". All of our B'nai Mitzvah students utilize a program called Mitzvah Tools which helps track their tutoring sessions, keeps their information in one place, and helps everything stay organized for their big day!

In addition to their individual studies, our students and their families attend a series of family programs which enhances the students experience as they become a B'nai Mitzvah. This programs includes:

  • A Visit to the Rabbi's Sukkah

  • Shabbat Family Dinners

  • A Group Service Project

  • Movie night with the Rabbi

  • A Torah Program and Practice Service

  • A Special Closing Huppah Service

TEEN GROUP

After their B’nai Mitzvah year, our students continue on to Teen Group, with Ye’ela leading and moderating. In teen group, the students discuss current events, social issues, or anything they would like. They are served dinner and have time to socialize with friends after a long day at school. Our teen group is so successful that the students never want to leave- they continue on until they go to college!

“In youth group, I’m in a close circle of friends and I can tell them anything. This year, we’ve all gone heart-to-heart with serious topics. We’ve goofed around with silly ones, and discussed political topics. We discuss everything from pizza to refugees to friend issues. We’ve covered topics both easy and difficult, debated, and just overall had a lot of fun.” -Jillian, teen group student
